SEMINARS - VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM

It is important that the PJIs meet leaders in their field of research. To help accomplish this, we have established a Visiting Scholars Program where each PJI invites an expert and leader in their field to visit our campus for 2-3 days and participate in a Distinguished Lecture Series co-sponsored by the Departments of Cell Biology and Ophthalmology. It is the responsibility of the PJI, with perhaps some "behind the scenes" input by the mentor, to contact the distinguished scientist and make all arrangements for their visit. The PJI acts as the local host, introduces the lecturer at his/her seminar, and arranges all activities such as evening meals, rides to and from the airport, and meetings scheduled with other scientists on campus. The distinguished visitors meet with all PJIs, as well as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in vision research laboratories. This provides invaluable experience to the PJI in a social aspect of science in which they are occasionally a participant, but never an organizer.
